PROJECT DEFINITION

Design the link before closing the wall

Structured cabling becomes expensive to change after finishes are complete. Coordinate outlet locations, rack space and pathway access with the other building systems early.

Agree before work starts

  • Room and outlet schedule for data, CCTV, intercom and access devices.
  • Pathways, cable type and rack/patch-panel selection tied to approved device needs.
  • Separation and protection requirements reviewed with the electrical and civil teams.
  • Port labels, patching plan and spare capacity shown on the drawing.

Verify before handover

  • Confirm the outlet and patch-panel labels follow one schedule.
  • Test each agreed link against the selected cable system requirements.
  • Provide rack elevations and the final port map.

Common questions

Can CCTV share the building network?

It can when switching, power, traffic and access control are designed for the combined load. The correct segmentation depends on the site.

Why document unused ports?

Spare ports are only useful when their physical location and capacity are known.
